I’m not going to show you what the outside of the banana peels looked like. That would be embarrassing. They were definitely extra ripe, as in smelling and tasting a little boozy. I’m okay with that, but the peels were extra dark; like starts with a b and rhymes with crown. Not lightly speckled ripe. That’s okay though, they were still perfectly good and perfect for making gourmet banana bread at home.

How To Make Gourmet Banana Bread At Home
First, you have to use extra ripe bananas. Once you’re like…hmmm I need to use those…give them an extra day. Second, you have to use a whole tablespoon of vanilla extract. Trust me.
There are no nuts in this banana bread, but I used La Tourangelle Toasted Walnut Oil…this keeps it moist. The last secret is not using too much flour. Many recipes out there call for almost 2 cups of flour…don’t do it. This just makes the banana bread really dense. We want it to be moist but not dense, right?
I used whole wheat flour, because there are very few occasions where I use white flour. The macros are about the same but there is more fiber going on, and because of this it goes a little easier on blood sugar. I only used 3/4 cup of whole wheat flour.
Lots of a cinnamon, lots of baking powder (in comparison to other recipes), and a pinch of salt. To make this recipe sugar free, I used my favorite sugar substitute, Swerve; both granulated and the brown sugar version. This is a solid sugar substitute that will not raise your blood sugar. It bakes just like sugar.
The streusel like topping makes it. The butter gets all melty into the top of the bread and the oats mixed with the Swerve gets all toasty on top. When this gourmet banana bread comes out of the oven, you will swear it is the best thing you have ever had.
What Ingredients Do You Need For Banana Bread?
There are some regular ingredients and some special ingredients you will need. Bananas, Swerve sugar substitute (brown and granulated), vanilla extract, roasted walnut oil, whole wheat flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, oats, and butter. I always buy the La Tourangelle roasted walnut oil at Walmart.

This is the best gourmet whole wheat banana bread you can make at home. No sugar, no nuts, and minimal whole wheat flour!
3 extra ripe bananas
2 Tbsp Swerve brown sugar (or regular brown sugar if needed)
1 Tbsp vanilla extract
2 Tbsp roasted walnut oil
3/4 cup whole wheat flour
2 tsp baking powder
pinch of salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup oats
3 Tbsp butter
1 Tbsp Swerve granulated (or regular sugar if needed)
Preheat oven to 350°
FOR THE BANANA BREAD:
Using a mixer* beat bananas, brown sugar, vanilla, and walnut oil until combined
In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and cinnamon
Slowly beat in flour mixture until combined
FOR THE TOPPING:
Stir together oats, butter, and Swerve granulated (sugar substitute)
In a greased** loaf dish, pour batter and top with oatmeal topping
Bake uncovered 45 minutes or until done in the center
* If you don’t have a mixer, make sure that you mash the bananas well. Whisk the other wet ingredients and then add the mashed bananas, stirring completely.
