I am so excited to share how to start a blog the easy way. You should know, there is a hard way. I have done it the hard way and then figured out how to do it quickly and easily . Over the last 10 years of blogging, I have started and stopped and given up and restarted. I’ve done it all. What I have learned is that longevity (sticking with it) starts with a good web hosting service.

I use Siteground web hosting for my food blog ThatAmyCakes.com as well as my Lifestyle blog TheFarmhouseLifestyle.com, and I believe Siteground is the easiest service to get started with. It is a one stop shop that allows you to start a WordPress blog and get hosting all in one place with no difficult file transfers (read: I’m a busy Mom and FTP is too much for my brain, skip it).
Let me mention here that I have had issues a couple of times (not knowing what to do) and they ARE SO NICE TO ME! They help me fix my problem and they are kind about it. That hasn’t been my experience with companies like Weebly, where I started out. With Siteground, it takes less than 10 minutes to start your blog.
Step 1: Choose A Hosting Plan
There are three options (you can always start with the lowest plan and move up as your grow):
- The StartUp plan is perfect for people with one website that are starting now.
- The GrowBig plan is a great value for money offer, including the option for multiple websites and the SuperCacher that greatly improves website speed.
- The GoGeek plan is perfect for people with e-commerce and larger sites, or more geeky development needs like more server resources and GIT integration.
Step 2: Choose A Domain Name
This is my favorite part! I love coming up with catchy names. If your chosen name is taken just play around with it until you find the right name that is available. For me, my nickname turned into my domain name but AmyCakes.com was already taken so I added “that” onto the beginning.
Step 3: Review and Save
Here you can choose any extra services. I recommend SG site scanner and WHOIS domain privacy.
Step 4: Start A New Website With WordPress
Once web hosting is set up, login to Siteground and follow the Wizard to set up WordPress. It will guide you through the clicks you need to make in less than 5 minutes.
STEP 5: Log in to WordPress
You will log in to WordPress by typing your domain name with /wp-admin on the end. Here is an example: http://www.yoursite.com/wp-admin. Once there you are officially a blogger! Congratulations, this is one of the most rewarding jobs you can have. Sharing your heart every day and reaching people is a blessing. It can be a part time side hustle, or a major money making career for you, it’s all about the amount of effort, truth, and sweat you are willing to put in.
